What to Pack for Paris

Packing for Paris: An Essentials List For All Seasons

The city of Paris has long been synonymous with three things: love, food, and fashion. Most everyone traveling to the City of Light is going with the intent to experience at least one of these if not all three. Whatever your plans are for your Paris visit, though, you’ve got to be dressed and accessorized for the occasion.

Welcome to our ultimate Paris packing list! We’ll cover essentials for every season, tips on dressing with the city’s trademark elegance and simplicity, and even apps for making your trip go as smoothly as possible. Before you start packing, we highly suggest booking a Paris accommodation where you can see the Eiffel Tower. It will add an extra layer of magic to your Paris trip.

Ready? Then Allons-y!

Get That Bag: Luggage and Packing Essentials for Paris

Let’s start at the very beginning (they say it’s a very good place to start): luggage. You can’t go anywhere without a good suitcase and a great organizational system if you want to have a successful trip. Happily, packing expert Rilee Smith has some amazing recommendations for baggage and accessories. Some of my favorite suggestions from her are:

Hanke Spinner Suitcase (Multiple Sizes Available) – This suitcase changes the packing game entirely. It opens like a trunk rather than a traditional suitcase, making packing so much more accessible and easy. Hard-sided in scratch-resistant polycarbonate for the highest level of protection, with a top-quality zipper and a good TSA-approved lock, your belongings will arrive safe and as neatly organized as when you left home.

Calpak Clear Toiletry Bag (Multiple Sizes Available) – Sturdy, easy to clean, and water-resistant, the Calpak toiletry bag range are some of the top of the line when it comes to keeping your skincare and shaving supplies in order. They look nice, the small size is TSA-compliant, and the fully clear sides and open-book layout of the bag make it so easy to access your toiletries while keeping things tidy.

Bagsmart Compression Packing Cubes – These well-made packing cubes let you pack in your clothing and then use an extra zipper to press out all of the extra air and reduce the size of the clothing footprint in your suitcase. More room to bring back souvenirs? Yes, please!

Golf Supags Backpack – This is a great travel backpack with a sleek profile and tons of organization and storage options. Water resistant outside and well-padded inside, you can feel that your belongings are excellently protected while you’re on the go.

Poppy & Peonies Go Getter Tote – If you’re more of a tote bag person, it doesn’t get much better than the Go Getter. It’s a stylish, versatile bag with two carrying options and a trolley sleeve. Inside, you’ve got multiple storage slots, a generous water bottle pocket, and it even has a removable padded laptop sleeve if you really can’t leave work behind.

Bonus Recommendation: L’Ange Le Duo Styler – This isn’t luggage, but it is one of Rilee’s favorite travel accessories. It can curl or straighten hair, it’s compact, and it’s dual voltage. It may be the perfect travel accessory for Paris visitors who want to keep their hair looking gorgeous at all times.

Rilee is a certified packing junkie, and I fully recommend that everyone follow her for some of the best packing and organizing info–she can show you how to pack a suitcase for just about any type of trip you can think of, plus she puts all the luggage she recommends through the travel wringer so you can feel secure that she’s only suggesting items she has personally tested and found herself able to endorse with confidence.

Fine Feathers: What to Wear in One of the World’s Fashion Capital Cities

The everyday fashion of Paris is legendary for its chic and elegant, yet practical silhouette. Like Parisians, we recommend that you reach for good-quality items with classic, simple lines. We particularly recommend embracing the concept of a capsule wardrobe, in which you coordinate a small wardrobe of items that all go together and can be mixed and matched to create multiple looks to suit any occasion.

Lost at where to begin? No idea what to pack for Paris? No problem! Whether you need a packing list for a quick weekend jaunt or a full two-week roster, we’ve got seasonal breakdowns for you that can help get you started.

Paris Packing List: Spring

With a season beginning in late February and lasting to early June, springtime in Paris can err on the side of being completely unpredictable. What you pack for Paris in April can be very different from what you pack for Paris in June! You’ll get some warm days, some chilly and wet days… it’s all over the map. Think layers, think flexibility.

For a trip during a Paris spring, ladies might consider bringing a few swappable skirts and tops. Prefer pants? Trousers with a slightly wider leg that you can layer over tights are the way to go. Adding warmth when needed is easy with that Parisian wardrobe staple, the light cardigan, and a simple long scarf that can be wrapped in a number of ways.

For your walks through the best parks in Paris, a pair of ballet flats with arch support and a good pair of water-resistant boots, both in neutral colors, should cover all your needs. If you prefer sneakers, a pair of low-profile white ones will provide a breezy twist for your dresses and a casual flair to your trouser ensembles–you’ll see them on many Parisians.

Gentlemen, the layering edict applies to you, too! Button-down shirts, a light pullover sweater, a few pairs of trousers in varying thicknesses, and a short belted leather trench coat will help you cut a dashing figure no matter the weather. As with the ladies, no more than two to three pairs of shoes: loafers, simple sneakers, and boots should do the trick.

Paris Packing List: Summer

Late June to early September encompasses the Parisian summer, and though considered the best time to visit Paris, it can be a doozy: hot, humid, and sunny. Parisians want to look good while also being comfortable, so pack light, breathable fabrics to keep yourself cool.

Keep your color palette simple when summer packing. This is the time for bright florals on the ladies and pale blues or light neutrals on the men. Loose linen or cotton shorts, simple button-down tops with short sleeves, and fluttery silk skirts keep anyone stylish while preventing overheating.

Shoe-wise, the low-profile white sneakers from the spring list work well again here if that’s what you like, with moisture-wicking socks to keep feet dry and fresh. Sandals are also a good option regardless of gender.

Taking care of one’s skin is also very French, so bring a cheeky wide-brimmed hat and some very good sunscreen to keep yourself protected.

Paris Packing List: Autumn

Break out the denim, folks, because autumn in Paris is when your good jeans get their time to shine. The French do love great denim, why not join them when the season calls for it? September to November in Paris is like a slightly darker springtime, a touch more moody, chilly with occasional pockets of warmth, perfect jeans weather.

Pair some relaxed fit jeans with a wide, dark belt, an array of button-down tops, sturdy ankle boots, and a boxy blazer: this is a formula that works on any gender to create a timelessly cool and chic silhouette.

For those who prefer the skirt life, opaque tights under long skirts with some movement to them are the way to go. Swap the ankle boots out for something a bit taller, always making sure they’re comfortable enough to withstand plenty of walking.

Paris Packing List: Winter

Staying warm is the word here from November to February. In the chill of a Paris winter, we begin with a structured wool coat; the length is up to you, but the wool is essential. Wool is a material that is warm even when wet, important in a chilly climate that could be snowy or could be rainy.

Boots with thin wool socks will keep your feet warm and dry at all times, and flip-top hybrid glove-mittens can allow you to access your phone for directions while still keeping your hands safe and cozy. Round off your look with a hat that goes over your ears and a scarf to fill in any gaps at the throat that your coat leaves. It’s important to stay snug while you’re roaming the most beautiful places in Paris!

Jeans are still a fantastic winter dress option on the casual end, but do also pack at least one pair of nice trousers or a long skirt in a heavier material for finer occasions. Bring a good thick sweater, and sleek layering options (in breathable fabrics to reduce sweat) to go underneath it.

Tips That Transcend Seasons

When you’re assembling your capsule wardrobe, make sure you can create at least one really nice outfit for a gourmet dinner out or an evening at the Moulin Rouge. Some higher-end places do have dress codes; they’re going to expect you to ditch the shorts and miniskirts in favor of neckties and simple, elegant dresses.

Ladies, if you intend to visit any churches or other religious institutions, or really anywhere conservative, keep a long scarf or shawl on hand to drape over your head or your shoulders. Gentlemen, be prepared to take off any hats you’re wearing.

Fashion goes beyond your clothing, of course; the importance of accessories can’t be overstated. When you’re packing, make sure to include a good pair of sunglasses–this retro Hepburn-esque pair is a classic option, as are these smoky aviators–as well as a snazzy compact travel umbrella, because there’s no reason you can’t look good while you stay dry.

Bits & Bobs: The Boring But Useful Extras

There are a few things that might not be glamorous on their own, but they’ll be critical for keeping you looking polished and put together during your time in Paris.

The Little Things

Crossbody Phone Wallet – Available in multiple styles and at all price points, this phone wallet is an easy thing you can get to help organize your credit cards, vaccination records, identification, and other critical travel documents.

Travel Tech Pouch – The Peak Design Origami Tech Pouch is a tiny but mighty force in keeping your cables, charging blocks, AirPods and battery banks corralled.

Reusable Travel Mug – Whether you need to keep hydrated or caffeinated, you can do it in style. The Simple Modern option I’ve linked here is a personal favorite, keeping drinks cold or hot for hours on end.

TRTL Travel Pillow – Keep the bags under the airplane, not under your eyes. The TRTL pillow is a unique travel pillow with a brace structure inside to really keep your head in place while you nap on the plane.

Travel Laundry Soap and a TIDE pen – Spills happen. Stay prepared by keeping a Tide pen in your bag and some laundry soap in your traveling bags.

AirTags – It’s never a bad idea to toss an Apple AirTag into your suitcase so you can track it, should it go off course. Not an Apple user? No worries, Tile has you covered.

Critical Applications + Other Touring Suggestions

Firstly or Airalo eSim Data – Forget about expensive international phone plans, get an eSim. If your phone is unlocked from your carrier and has global capabilities, the eSim is the most affordable way to travel and still stay connected.

Bonjour RATP – This app covers public transit not only for Paris but all of Île-de-France, and deals with multiple forms of transport. You can trip plan and manage your Navigo travel pass within the app.

Bolt or Uber – Should you find yourself in need of being driven around, Uber works well in Paris, though travelers recently have come to recommend Bolt more. It’s up to you which you prefer, but maybe give both a try.

Google Maps – A classic and useful navigational tool, if you don’t have this on your phone already then now’s the time to get it. You can download maps for offline usage, allow friends to keep track of your location, and check directions for multiple forms of transit.

Above All: Have a Fantastique Time!

Even the most comprehensive packing list can’t cover every eventuality. And that’s okay! If you forget something, that’s what shopping is for, and there’s no better place to shop than Paris, right? Our most essential piece of advice is to just relax and have fun. Because no matter what you pack or why you’re going to Paris, we want you to have a wonderful time in the City of Lights, discovering all its beauty and perhaps even its most Instagrammable places! Bonne journée!
